Why do Business people go to networking meetings?

Know – Like – Trust.
This is the mantra of business networks everywhere and it has been repeated so often that it may have lost its meaning. The bottom line is that before you do any business with anybody from a domestic plumber fitting a bathroom to a supplier for your chain of restaurants, you must know, like and trust them. It's obvious really because if you're going to be in business with someone you will want to share in your successes and, more importantly, know that there is support if you're running into problems.

Getting to know someone that you're going to go into business with is crucial to your ongoing success. You can never say that you know someone from meeting them a couple of times at a networking  meeting. You need to have met on a few occasions, in different environments and under different circumstances. You might like to meet in the pub and at their place of work, find out how they do business and how they treat and are treated by their employees. You need to see through the suit and make sure that their goals are in line with yours and also understand what your position is with them.

Only now can you begin to form an opinion of the person; if you enjoy their company then you can tick off 'like'. Now comes the harder part, which is 'trust'. How do you really know if they are trustworthy? You might ask for references but that's giving them the ball when you need to keep control.

When you belong to a Business Networking group you always have the support of your 'club'. If you do need a new supplier then ask your group if anyone can recommend one, or if you've found one then ask your group if anyone knows them. A good networking group work together for the good of the whole not just as individuals and it is in everyone's interest to be working within a network of business owners who are all trusted by one another- a bit like Al Pacino in 'Donnie Brasco' introducing Johnny Depp to the mob as 'a friend of mine'. You are only as good as your recommendations. A member of your group may well know someone who knows someone who knows them and this is the best way to get around the trust element of the mantra.
